Immigration is a growing phenomenon in European countries and will remain so in the foreseeable future. This means that migrant children will enter European education systems in increasing numbers. New member states of the European Union are required to adhere to guidelines and rules that are mentioned in the European 'acquis communautaire'. According EU directive 77/486 new states should build an educational infrastructure for the education of children of migrant workers.

Sardes was and is partner is several projects to provide an insight in current policy and practice in the education of children from ethnic minority backgrounds and assistance with the implementation of the EU directive:
