Estonia is one of the new member states of the European Union. The country is required to adhere to guidelines and rules that are mentioned in the European acquis communautaire. According EU directive 77/486, the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research should build an educational infrastructure for education of the children of migrant workers. From January 2003 until December 2004, Sardes provided technical assistance to the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research for the implementation of this EU directive. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs financed the project in the framework of Matra Pre-Accession Programme. Deliverables Together with the Ministry and the Integration Foundation, Sardes organized public awareness activities, such as a poster contest, a brochure Going to school in Estonia (download pdf) and various interviews in newspapers, on the radio and on TV about the topic. The project ended in December 2004 with a large closing conference in Tallinn, in the presence of the Minister of Population Affairs, Mr. Paul-Eerik Rummo and the Dutch Ambassador, mrs.
